What is the Alpha Course?
The Alpha Course is a series of weekly evening sessions exploring the Christian faith, typically run over ten weeks. Each talk, or session, looks at a different question around faith and is designed to create conversation. Alpha is run all around the globe in cafés, churches, universities, homes – you name it! The Alpha Course has also been described as “an opportunity to explore the meaning of life”.
The Alpha Course evenings will consist of three main components:
The first evening of Alpha is an introductory evening, and a complimentary meal will be served at 7pm in the foyer. At every Alpha evening thereafter, we will serve a delicious warm meal from our Life Café, @ R30 pp. Supper is optional, but highly encouraged as it is an integral part of the Alpha evening, where you get to relax and enjoy good food and good company!
These are presented by way of the Alpha Film Series DVDs, each DVD presentation is about twenty-five minutes long. They explore the big issues around faith and unpack the basics of Christianity. They address questions including “Who is Jesus?”, “How can we have faith?”, “Why and how do I pray?” and “How does God guide us?”.
Small group discussion (…with a nice hot cuppa too)
Probably the most important part of any Alpha Course: the opportunity to share thoughts and ideas on the specific evening’s topic…to simply enjoy discussion in a small group setting. There’s no obligation to say anything and there’s nothing you can’t say (seriously!). It’s an opportunity to hear from others and add your own perspectives in an honest, respectful and open environment.
Worldwide, it is estimated that over 30 million people have done the Alpha Course to date. The Alpha materials are printed in over 112 languages and the Alpha Course is run in over 170 countries.
